Devon Discovery

Devon Discovery

10th December 2014 | posted in Category

The Discovery motorhome from Devon Conversions on the latest Ford Transit panel van has brought an interesting combination of features at a highly competitive price.

Launched at NEC in October, the Discovery follows in the wheeltracks of a Transit-based Devon Discovery in the 80s and 90s but the new model brings something fresh to the range.

The interior is a complete break from anything else offered by Devon Conversions, with an L-shaped lounge area at the front that can be converted to a dinette layout with facing bench seats, giving space for two passengers to use the two three point seat belts, or a U-shaped lounge incorporating the swivel front seats.

On the rear nearside, behind the sliding door, is the kitchen area with a sink set under a smoked glass lid. A matching cover hides the twin burner hob, which is set above an oven. The unit also houses a cupboard, pan drawer, cutlery drawer, and built-in wine rack.

Opposite is a washroom with fixed handbasin, Thetford 402 cassette toilet, and two cupboards as well as a mirror, shower tray, and outlet for the Truma combi gas and electric blown air heating which draws from an underfloor 30 litre gas tank. Behind the washroom is the wardrobe above a Dometic 85 litre three way fridge with a removable freezer compartment. The sink and bathroom water supply is from a 52 litre fresh tank with a 27 litre waste tank.

At night, the front seating area converts to a double bed measuring 6ft 4ins by 4ft. There is ample storage beneath both sections of the lounge seating with more in overhead lockers and above the cab.

Based on the Transit long wheelbase in Trend trim and a 2.2 litre 125 bhp turbodiesel engine driving the front wheels, the Discovery is under 6 metres in length. The gross vehicle weight of 3,500 kgs allows a generous payload of 837 kgs.

The specification includes a six speed manual gearbox with cruise control, cab air conditioning, passenger airbag, heated windscreen and door mirrors, power adjustment and folding for the door mirrors, metallic paint, and Bluetooth connectivity. On the road price is £44,381.

With the washroom, wardrobe, and kitchen area in the rear, the way is cleared for a totally uncluttered lounge with an emphasis on versatility and space,” explains Peter Gowland of Devon Conversions.

The price competes with campervans on the smaller Transit Custom but the Discovery offers a full-size toilet / shower room plus a genuine double bed.

Owners who prefer more luxury will find the Discovery gives a great deal for their money.”
